The Omega Speedmaster was introduced in 1957. This model was used as a tool watch in the racing world. For example, the Speedmaster has a chronograph function. The Speedmaster is known for the model used by NASA as the first watch on the moon. NASA wanted to provide astronauts with a durable timepiece and Omega passed all the rigorous tests conducted between 1964 and 1965. The reference 3590.50 was in production from 1988 until the year 1996, making it the very last Speedmaster model introduced to the market with tritium. This model contains the famous hand-wound 861 calibre that has been used by Omega since 1968. Omega

La Generale Watch Company, Omega's parent company, was founded in 1848 in the Swiss city La Chaux de Fonds by 23-year-old Louis Brandt. In 1866, Brandt passed away, leaving his company in the hands of his two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar. The two brothers brought many fresh, innovative ideas to the company, which led to the development of a new caliber in 1894: the famous 19-lignecaliber. This caliber was so precise, and subsequently, succesful, that the brothers decided to change their company name in 1903; the year "Omega Watch Co." was born.
