Rolex Datejust 16030 'Ghost Dial' 1987

In the 1960s and 1970s, the 4-digit 16XX Datejust series was introduced by Rolex. This series featured the 1570 movement. In the late 1970s, the 5-digit reference was introduced by Rolex. The Datejust models with the 5-digit reference like this 16030 feature an upgraded 3035 movement with quick-set date function allowing the date set manually. This makes the watch a lot more user-friendly and perfect for everyday use. The difference with the Datejust 16014, which features a white gold fluted bezel, is that the 16030 features a steel engine-turned bezel. This one is no longer produced by Rolex.

It's fair to say that a numerous different dial variants have appeared for the Datejust over the years. Still, the steel 16030 models were given a relatively conventional selection of dials to choose from, such as black, white, blue, linen textured, tapestry and the silver colour which is often seen. Yet we cannot forget a special dial. You don't often hear about a Rolex Datejust starting to haunt you. But it really does exist! The font sometimes disappears without you noticing and the dial changes from light grey to dark grey. This Rolex Datejust 16030 features the unusual and spooky grey ghost dial.

This beautiful vintage Rolex Datejust 16030 dates from the year 1987 and is in truly wonderful condition. The unique grey dial makes this watch a real eye-catcher but also suitable for daily use. Of course, we cannot forget the discoloured tritium on the hands and dial. The 36mm case is thick and the lugs are razor-sharp. Datejust

In the year 1945 the first Datejust was introduced in honour of the 40-year existence of Rolex, under the reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a watertight case that also indicated the date. It even automatically transitioned the date after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with a serrated bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet, especially designed for the Datejust. The date was placed on the 3-hour mark. Ten years later, in 1955, the date-window was given a "cyclops lens", which magnifies the date up to two and a half times.

Rolex's most iconic models were produced to function as "tool watches". The Datejust, however, did not have a specific purpose. This model was supposed to be a classic, reliable, everyday watch, suitable for any occasion in day-to-day life.
